The Marketing Journey Begins
I don’t know anything about marketing. Or at least I don’t think I know. For a week now I’ve embarked on a journey of trying to get people to watch my movie. The viewing initial blast of people involved and their friends are over.
Everyone I know has seen it or ignored it.
I know little about getting my work out there, but there’s just as much work involved in promoting it as there is in making it. Much like figuring out first hand how to make a movie, it’s now time to take myself to marketing school.
I do not want to keep spamming people online to watch it. The goal now is to build an audience. How? Good question!
So far I’ve had very little luck emailing film blogs and taste maker sites
Selling myself is an issue that I’ll have to improve, and much like job hunting, a majority of the work will go ignored. That can really take the wind out of my sails, but hustle ain’t easy, so I have to keep after it.
The goal is get the film seen. How do people find out about things like this? How did the stuff I like find me? This is a question most people don’t ask themselves.
You hear it from sources you trust mostly:
In ‘print’ you trust: Blog, taste specific site, magazines
In someone your trust: friend, member of organization, celebrity
Everyone is in their own groups or circles. The goal is to break into these circles and be introduced to their members. Circles overlap and people are members of several circles, so the hope is to compell them to share it with others. Other circles, more people, etc.
Please understand my goal is not to get fame or be popular or get money. I have a very small circle (don’t we all) and I really want people outside my circles to see this film. Not just anyone though. If I wanted hits for hits sake I could pay some one.
Marketing is about connecting. Breaking through the noise.
